Victory Over Life’s Challenges

Together we can make a difference

How Can You Help?

The Start Of Moeggesukkel

Papenfus Family

There is hope!

Moeggesukkel is a non-governmental organisation. We proudly reflect on our role in housing, feeding, reconciling, and creating job opportunities for thousands of people. We serve as a vital support system for many, striving to restore hope in situations that seem hopeless.

Thanks to the financial support and the dedication of countless volunteers over the years, Moeggesukkel has made a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

We appreciate every contribution, no matter the size, which helps us create lasting change in communities in need.

The story of Moeggesukkel began with a spark of compassion in the heart of our founder, Jacques Papenfus. Who shared a meal with two homeless people called 'Basie' and 'Klasie'. His vision to bring hope to those suffering became the foundation of our journey, igniting a flame of hope that continues to burn brightly today.

Here are some snippets of our journey, follow it with us to the end...

Papenfus Family

You Are Valuable! “Jy Is Kosbaar.”

You are valuable! "Jy is kosbaar"

The “Jy is Kosbaar” project was born from one man’s simple yet powerful act of compassion. Jacques began with nothing more than a table, a few chairs, and a heart filled with love. He parked beside the road, prepared a warm meal, and waited — not just to feed an empty stomach, but to touch a soul that may have forgotten its worth.

Each encounter was more than a meal. It was a sacred moment — a moment of connection, dignity, and healing. Jacques sat down with strangers, listened to their stories, and looked beyond the hardship, the pain, and the labels society often gives. In every conversation, he reminded them that they are not invisible. That they matter. That they are valuable — kosbaar — in ways far deeper than what the world can see.

What started as a simple gesture became a movement of hope. Through every shared smile, every prayer, and every plate of food, Jacques sowed seeds of love and restoration. He showed that compassion can rebuild lives, that kindness can restore faith, and that when one person chooses to care — hearts begin to heal. The “Jy is Kosbaar” message is a reminder to us all:

No matter where you come from, no matter what you’ve lost, no matter how broken you feel — you are precious. You are worthy. You are loved. Because sometimes, all it takes to change a life is someone who believes in your value — and reminds you of it, one meal, one word, one act of love at a time.

Where hope finds a home

Moeggesukkel is more than just a shelter; it brings hope.

Moeggesukkel is more than just a shelter — it’s a place where hope comes alive. At Moeggesukkel Reconciliation NPC in Centurion, over 108 people have found not just a roof over their heads, but a home where they are seen, valued, and given the chance to begin again. Each person once faced the uncertainty of the streets, but within these walls, they’ve discovered safety, dignity, and the courage to rebuild their lives. Every room holds a story — of pain turned into purpose, of despair transformed into hope, and of lives being restored one day at a time.

Here are some of the stories...

Mart

We received a call one day — a woman was seen wandering the streets with her dog. Nobody knew her name, where she came from, or how long she had been there. When we found her, she was frightened and confused, clutching onto the one soul who never left her side — her dog. Through her trembling words, we could make out her name: Mart.

We shared her photo on Facebook, hoping someone might recognize her. The response came quickly — Mart had been reported missing since December 2023. She had been lost for years… unseen, unheard, and never forgotten . Her story broke our hearts. Many had tried before to help her, but every time someone reached out, she would run away — perhaps from fear, confusion, or simply not knowing who to trust anymore. This time, with patience, kindness, and help from emergency services, we managed to get her the care she so desperately needed. An ambulance arrived, and she was gently taken to the hospital where she began her journey of healing.

Today, Mart is not just safe — she’s part of our family at Moeggesukkel. She’s working, smiling again, and slowly rebuilding her life. Her story reminds us that no one is ever too lost to be found, and that with love and perseverance, even the most broken stories can be rewritten with hope.

Theuns (Thinus)

When we first met Uncle Theuns, he was living in heartbreaking conditions in Pretoria West — a small, broken space where sewerage water ran down from the top flats. Life had not been kind to him, and though our friend AJ did everything he could, the situation was simply too much for one person to handle alone.

When we brought Uncle Theuns to Moeggesukkel, everything changed. From the moment he arrived, he brought warmth, laughter, and light into every corner of the place. His smile could brighten the darkest day, and his faith — simple yet unshakable — inspired everyone who met him. Soon, he became more than a resident; he became family. Many came to know him as “the Facebook icon of Moeggesukkel,” always sharing joy and encouragement with that twinkle in his eye.

For nearly two beautiful years,we had the privilege of caring for him through his golden years — walking beside him, laughing with him, praying with him. In April 2024, Uncle Theuns passed away, leaving a quiet emptiness in the halls he once filled with joy.

We remember him with love and gratitude — his laughter still echoes in our hearts. Uncle Theuns, you were the sunshine at Moeggesukkel, and though you are gone, your light will never fade. We loved you dearly and miss you deeply.

Johantjie

From the very first moment we met Johantjie, laughter filled the air. Bright, loving, and full of joy, he had that special spark — the kind that lights up a room and warms every heart around him. We fetched him from another center, not knowing that he would soon become one of the most loved members of the Moeggesukkel family.

When he looked at Jacques and asked, with a big smile, “Can I call you Dad?” — we knew he had already found his place. From that moment on, he wasn’t just a resident; he was family.

At Moeggesukkel, Johantjie discovered his passion for gardening. You’ll often find him outside, hands in the soil, tending to flowers and vegetables with the same care and joy he brings to everyone he meets. His laughter is contagious, his hugs are real, and his heart is pure gold.

Today, he’s proudly known on social media as our “Safety Officer” — a title that makes him beam with pride. But to us, he’s much more than that. He’s a reminder that joy can bloom anywhere, that family isn’t always about blood, and that sometimes, all it takes to belong is a heart full of love and a good sense of humor.

Noleen & Kayla

When we first met Noleen and her young daughter, Kayla, they were sitting on the pavement — surrounded by all their belongings, their world packed into a few bags. They had been on the streets for two days after being thrown out of their home. Noleen looked up at us, tired and broken, yet behind her sadness shone the most beautiful blue eyes — eyes that still carried a spark of hope.

We had no rooms left at Moeggesukkel. Every bed was taken, every corner filled. But leaving them on the street wasn’t an option. By God’s grace, we decided to open the caravan space — even though it wasn’t ready yet. It wasn’t perfect, but it was safe. It was a start.

And from that moment, something beautiful began to grow. Noleen and Kayla slowly started to heal. Day by day, they smiled a little more, laughed a little louder, and began to believe again. They didn’t just find shelter — they found family, purpose, and faith.

Today, Noleen and Kayla are working with our food trailers, “Flippen Lekker Pancakes,” spreading joy and sweetness wherever they go. They are rebuilding their lives with courage and determination, proving that even from the darkest places, hope can rise again. Their story reminds us that sometimes, all a miracle needs is a little space — and a lot of love.

Here are some more inspiration...

Paul Doen Dit - New Tools, New Opportunity

Paul, a determined young man from Krugersdorp, could often be seen walking the streets with his homemade garden cart, searching for gardens to maintain. With limited resources and endless determination, he dreamed of building his own gardening business — one patch of soil at a time.

But dreams need more than hard work alone. With the support of a caring community, Paul’s vision began to take shape. Today, he proudly wears a branded shirt, carries professional tools, and even has a logo that represents his growing business. And the latest miracle? An electric bike bakkie to make his work easier and more efficient. He is the proud owner of ' Paul doen Dit " garden service.

Paul’s story is a testament to what’s possible when hard work meets opportunity, when faith meets action, and when a community steps in to lift someone up. Through God’s grace and the generosity of those around him, a young man with a dream has turned determination into reality — proving that with support, perseverance, and heart, anything is possible.

Shorty

Uncle Shorty and his son were well-known on the streets, pushing a trolley and collecting scrap just to survive. Life had been harsh, and each day was a struggle. When we first met them, it was clear how much they had endured — and how much they still needed help.

Through social media, we shared their story, and the response was overwhelming. With the community’s support, we were able to build a trailer they could pull with a bicycle, easing their daily burden. But that was only the beginning. We built them a wooden home, modest but spacious enough for the whole family — a place where they could finally feel safe and cared for.

We shared meals and provided basic necessities — toiletries and essentials that most of us take for granted. Each small act brought tears — tears of gratitude, tears of relief, and tears of the immense weight they had carried for so long. We shared milestones and birthdays, moments heavy with emotion, witnessing both sorrow and hope intertwined.

Uncle Shorty’s journey reminds us that even after years of hardship and suffering, hope can take root when compassion meets action. With God’s grace and the support of a caring community, lives that once seemed forgotten can find dignity, shelter, and a chance to start anew.
